It was fantastic to see Justin Rose win the first Olympics golf event for 112 years, somebody who really believed that golf should be back at the Olympics. What a brilliant, tense final round. Level with Henrik Stenson on 15 under after 17 holes, Rose holed a birdie putt on the last to win the gold medal.

“That felt better than anything I’ve ever won. It was the best tournament I’ve ever done,” said Rose. I wonder if there were any regrets among those top golfers who chose not to go? Rose relished the prospect of becoming an Olympian since the moment the sport’s return to the Games was confirmed in 2009 and the title could not have gone to a more worthy champion.
